Sexy Findings PDF Print E-mail
By HOLLYJEAN ALLEN

Sexy: [sek-see]–adjective, sex··i·er, sex·i·est. Origin: 1920–25; sex + -y

1. concerned predominantly or excessively with sex; risqué
2. sexually interesting or exciting; radiating sexuality
3. excitingly appealing; glamorous.
4. the most over used word in Second Life

We can find sexy clothing, skins, hair, eyes, shapes, shoes, hats, couches, curtains, trees, and even sexy teleporters to lead to your sexy new skybox with its sexy clouds. There are sexy gestures, poses, walks, sits, dances, and even flying animations! You can be a sexy executive, doctor, nurse, firefighter, cop, farmer, gunslinger, chef, construction worker, teacher, and deep sea diver. If the run of the mill sexiness were not enough how about sexy aliens, dragons, mermaids, foxes, cats, cybrids, hybrids, robots, witches, warlocks, demons, angels, ghosts, centaurs, elves, fairies, zombies and vampires.

EEEEEK! There is no escaping it!

A search for things that are modest, conservative, mature, or sedate result in frustration! Modest gets you some silly Gorean clothes, conservative is a political designation, mature is a list of even more sexy places and items, and sedate will get you a list of cyber drug resources.

We come out of the ‘box’ sexy. Not that long ago, all avatars entered SL naked! One of the newbie choices features a see through blouse. Most of the products offered free are, gulp, sexy! As we move away from looking newborn, the sexiness is always there. We are almost all of us sexy to the max in SL. Very few opt for a realistic look. An overweight avatar is extremely rare. White hair is a Goth thing. And wrinkled skins cost a fortune. A friend tried to create a gender neutral av and it really couldn’t be done.

We all know that there is a real person behind each avatar. And, as real people, we want to be admired and liked. I never had the thighs for mini skirts in RL, but cellulite is illegal in SL. I’d never wear spike heels in RL, but my favorite shoes in SL are very tall and very pointy. Enjoying the fantasy is part of the, um, sexiness of our second lives.

I would just like to offer the following synonyms in an effort to give that over used word a break: arousing, come-hither, cuddly, flirtatious, hot, inviting, kissable, libidinous, mature, provocative, provoking, racy, risqué, seductive, sensual, sensuous, slinky, spicy, steamy, suggestive, titillating, or voluptuous.

A Woman of Many Talents PDF Print E-mail

Franja Russell, the AVL volunteer of the month for December, has always wanted to talk to characters in novels. She wants to ask the villains why they perform the horrendous acts they undertake, and to query the heroes and heroines about when they decided to take on the courageous acts that would earn them the title of hero. And in SL, as keeper of the Science Fiction Portal, she is able to come close to her childhood dream by inviting authors of works of speculative fiction to come to SL and talk about their books and their characters.

In 2005, Franja purchased a computer and Internet connectivity. A friend suggested that she take a look at SL; she had had no experience with virtual worlds prior to that time. Finding that the world intrigued her, she took many classes, learning how to make her way around in the virtual environment, and in particular, to build. She has built, indeed, both for herself and for others.

When the Sci-Fi & Fantasy Portal was new, Franja volunteered there. She made furniture, stages and seating, organized programs and events. When the original Leader had to withdraw from SL, Franja accepted the role of Portal Leader. She works energetically on behalf of the portal and of the information archipelago. For the Science Fiction Portal, she initiated the very popular events program, bringing authors to SL to discuss their works, holding film discussions, and ensuring that the Portal’s space and collections are exciting and informative places to visit.

Elsewhere in SL, Franja became involved with stroke survivors and their caretakers, in large part because of a series of strokes that her mother had suffered. She loves talking with people from other countries and from other areas of the United States; she would simply like more time to do everything she wants to do!

She is an able designer and gardener. This interviewer had the good fortune to talk with her at her house in SL; it’s a beautiful house, furnished with lovely items, and surrounded by gardens that she clearly tends as well as she tends her RL gardens. In RL, she collects wooden flute music, primarily Native American and Asian, and she has imported some of this music to SL, where it surrounds her in the house that she created.

For running the Science Fiction portal with energy and grace, always seeking to try new things, and tirelessly managing the portal and creating programming for Science Fiction and Fantasy at AVL., she is the Volunteer of the Month for December 2008, an award that is richly deserved.

Bud Is AVL’s Marketing Coordinator! PDF Print E-mail

Buddhistlibrarian (Bud) Ballyhoo is the new Marketing Coordinator for the Alliance Virtual Library (AVL). Abbey Zenith announced the appointment, saying “Budd has been volunteering with us for some time and she is excited to step into this new volunteer position. She will be responsible for adding events, textures and notecards to the signs in the welcome center and for distributing them to others in the project who want to display events.”

Bud says that her responsibilities will include ensuring that word gets out about events on the Information Islands. Ideally, she would love everyone in SL to know what we are doing here; she recognizes that this is a formidable task, but wants to approach the world’s residents and areas systematically, bringing word of the many and various events that are of interest to librarians and nonlibrarians alike.

Recognizing that each program on the Information Archipelago already has its own mechanism for public relations and marketing, she says that her job will be that of coordinating existing PR and taking responsibility for the general displays and signs that are scattered around the islands.

Why would she take on such a large task? She reports that she indicated an interest in volunteering, and was stunned when Abbey asked her to consider marketing. However, she is “happy to be helping” with anything that makes the Information Islands more visible to the rest of the world’s inhabitants.

She originally learned of SL at a meeting of the Florida Library Association, where Stephen Abrams was the keynote speaker. Hearing him talk about SL and its potential for libraries, she "came home, got a powerful enough computer, and jumped in." She also volunteers once a week at the reference desk on International Island, and she loves to dance (like many of us, she says she’s a better dancer in SL than in RL). She loves the friends she has made, and enjoys simply hanging out and talking with them. According to Bud, this is the best way to network and make friends, both in SL and in RL. In particular, she loves her conversation with LIS students.

When asked if she had been able to bring SL to her RL library, Bud says that this has not yet happened, but she wants to use SL in her library in a manner that will be most effective.

Our new marketing coordinator is an enthusiastic proponent of libraries and SL alike. We are fortunate to have her in this new role.

Bluewings Hayek PDF Print E-mail
Written by Eirene Janus

There aren't too many librarians in Second Life who don't know Bluewings or who haven't at least heard of her. In the real life library world, she is known as Kelly Czarnecki, the teen librarian for Imagin On at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. In Second Life, she heads Eye4You Alliance Island. Due to her ability to partner with other organizations such as Global Kids, NASA, and the Science Tech Museum and her willingness to foster many other librarians and educators interested in creating programs for teens in virtual worlds, the island has been home to many successful events and created lasting bonds between people.

These are just some of the events in this last year alone: Teen College Fair, Science Fridays with Arc Indigo of NASA, the Craft Fair, the building of the teen Land of Lincoln, Medieval Tournaments every week, Model UN debates. And Second Life is just one part of Kelly's job as the teen librarian. She has also created numerous innovative teen programs outside of virtual worlds, developing a 'Be Smart-wired' program to teach teens about tools such as Library Thing, podcasting, machinima, and so on. In an interview with Library Journal, Kelly once said "I play, too, and I'm not ashamed to say that, because it refreshes the spirit and renews our outlook on our work. We create videos or podcasts with the teens, take digital photos of what's going on that day, and add them to our Flickr account—and laugh a lot.” This is her essence...her ability to bring freshness to everything that she does, and her willingness to try anything - at least once.

Daisy gives us the answers PDF Print E-mail

By LEEORIE ALTER

The lyrics from the old song are a good fit for Daisyblue Hefferman:

Daisy, Daisy/Give me your answer do/I'm (we’re!) half crazy/all for the love of you

For those of us who work with Alliance Virtual Library, Hefferman is likely to be one of the first names of library “elders” we come across (she’s been in world since December 2006) and her name continues to appear in connection with all manner of library-related projects and committees. She lends her considerable expertise and experience and seems to never tire of helping out.

So it comes as no surprise that Daisyblue was named the AVL Volunteer of the Month for November. “I admire the whole library effort here, and want to do my part. I love to build and create things. It’s really an extension of real life in that respect,” she said. “We also think the world of Lori Bell (Project Manager for the Alliance Virtual Library project and Director of Innovation for Alliance Library Systems), and would do anything she asks.”
