I joined Second Life in September 2006 but wasn't in world much until after I took "Librarianship in Second Life" through Syracuse Univerisity's MLIS program. During the class I met several librarians working on Info Island and found their work here fascinating. I was hooked. I started taking all kinds of classes in SL, building, scripting and photography. I became involved with The Photo Institute, first as a student and then as a librarian and faculty member. As I polished my photography skills, I also started working with Dulcie Mills as her assistant for her work with the Metaverse Messenger (M2). I enjoy this work tremendously; I have a great time interviewing people, attending events and taking photographs. In real life, I have a PhD. in Biochemistry and will soon complete my MLIS. I am a scientific informatics analyst at the Marine Biological Laboratory. My work in Second Life gives me a creative outlet that was missing in my life. In addition to my work with The Photo Institute and Metaverse Messenger, I have developed the Art & Photography Collection on Info Island and have a small photography gallery on Only Yesterday.
The Assistant Multimedia Editor position attracted me because it will enable me to continue to be involved in SL journalism and photography, as well as learn more about other modes of information presentation like machinima. The individuals involved with RezLibris and all library activities in SL are amazing, talented and inspirational. I hope to aid RezLibris in highlighting the great work and wonderful people here on the Information Archipelago and to demonstrate to other educators and librarians what is possible in a virtual world. |
