I came to librarianship late in life, but I really think I always was a librarian. Being the shy and retiring type, I spent a lot of my early life in libraries poking around the shelves and really, really wanting to go to Narnia or be Sara in The Little Princess. That didn't happen so I grew up and went to college instead.
A little bit of back-story first: I was born in South Korea just a little bit after the end of the Korean War -yes I know, I'm dating myself. My father is a New Zealander and my mother is Korean...so, I went to what they now call an International School in the capital city, Seoul. I guess the experience of attending a school filled with kids from many different parts of the world was what led me to study and earn a Bachelors (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) and Masters (University of South Florida) in International Relations. Since about the middle of my early college years, my area of interest has been the ethics of war, and I continue to keep up with the literature in that area as best I can.
Along the way to the Masters in IR, I ended up picking up a Masters in Library and Info Science (also at USF) while researching for my thesis. And that led me to Second Life. It's been a fascinating experience so far, and I'm amazed at how much librarians and educators are doing in SL. I am currently working on a PhD in Education at the University of Central Florida and am looking forward to incorporating my areas of study as well as my work and other experiences into creating new instructional designs.
I'm excited to be a part of RezLibris, and am learning so much about how to design and maintain a magazine website, along with all the other publishers, editors and writers. My vision for the magazine is that it will inspire librarians from all over the world to come together and collaborate - be it in virtual worlds such as Second Life or on other platforms that can only be imagined - by delivering creative and complete coverage of issues that can ignite librarian interest and involvement in the community. |
