Being a Star Trek fan, two years ago I was invited to check out Second Life by a friend and fellow Starfleet member, Admiral Brice Campbell. After walking into walls, falling from the sky and teleporting into floorboards, I finally got the hang of things and it didn’t take me too long to learn how to dance, play hockey, skydive, surf, scuba dive, ride horseback, drive a speedboat, fly a helicopter, create buildings, create animations, create scripts and fulfill the dream of becoming a “rock star”! Apart from my SL singing career, I am also a student of Library Science, a discipline I fell in love with many years ago. Life choices, as often they do, took me in another direction, detouring my career choice into the world of I.T. as a software developer and project manager. I see a future joining the two disciplines, ultimately working with LMS or OPAC software as an Information Architect, perhaps helping with migrations or building libraries from the ground up. No matter where it takes me, I am happy to be back on track!
Originally born and raised on Long Island, NY, I have lived in Oklahoma, San Diego, Florida and most recently Northern California. In San Diego I obtained an AA in Theater Arts and a Bachelors in Business Administration with an emphasis in Computer Information Systems, later on achieving a Masters degree in Information Systems. When I decided to pursue an MLS I researched it thoroughly and decided on an adventure! I discovered that the accreditation from CILIP, the UK equivalent to the ALA, was accepted in the US! I thought to myself, the more options, the better! So here I am, in the UK for one year while I work on my CILIP accreditation! Culture shock!
While at school I happily discovered that the eLearning department had recently ventured into Second Life and celebrated the launching of their eLearning island in early November. I did some diggin’ and found that the library had no plans to establish SL presence, so I decided for one of my project papers to assess the viability of such an undertaking. I had some familiarity with Caledon and Info Island but did not realize how vast it was with the ALA, the SLA, Cybrary islands, the Alliance, Harvard Library and many more I uncovered in my quest for information. I was even lucky enough to attend the ALA Slymposium and was inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of the speakers and the many librarians in attendance. When I saw the opportunity with RezLibris, I jumped on it, ready to get involved. I believe RezLibris to be a publication of the highest caliber and am honored to have been entrusted with its promotion. What a great way to stay united in virtual world librarianship! Watch for incoming invitations! |
