The three sim maps behind the reference desk have been upgraded.  No previous functions have been removed, but the maps will now also respond to a typed chat command.  It occurred to me while working with a patron this week that it's hard to point to a spot on one of the maps unless you know where to point.  This upgrade fixes that.

Suppose a patron wants to go to the Wine Library on Cybrary II.  You want to show her where it is, but you don't know where to click on the map.  So, now you can just type "/8 Wine Library" (without the quotes) and a red dot will appear on the right spot.  In fact, you don't need to type the full name if the first few letters are unique.   You could type "/8 Wi" and get the same red dot.  The only time you need to type more of a name is when there are two or more possible spots that start the same.  For example, "/8 My" could mean "Mystery Manor" or "Mythica Library".  In that case, "/8 Mys" or "/8 Myt" would be a better choice.

All you have to remember is ------> Type "/8 "  and the first few letters of a destination anywhere on the three CVL sims.

As before, if you are wearing your Library Reference Group tag, you may also click on any spot to create a red dot.  Your patron, not wearing a Library Reference Group tag, may click anywhere to get an LM.

Librarians?

Yes, you see, this place was a library.  A ground-breaking virtual library located in Second Life.  A virtual world where literally everything is possible.  In fact, the exact location of the nightly gathering was the Reference Desk of the library.  As the crowds arrived each evening, some place among them was a volunteer librarian ready to help any visitor with answers to questions about, well, about almost anything.

The librarians were sincere in their belief that the Second Life activity would be trail-blazing.  A bridge to the future of information delivery.  Many of the librarians had obtained financial support to advance the virtual library concept.  Almost every one of them poured in hours and hours of personal time to the topic.

Things grew and grew, and changed rapidly.  The project objectives were reviewed, and some fine tuning was begun.  As the direction became focused, it became clear that the social nature of the Reference Desk was getting in the way of the primary goals of the library.  Hints of plans to radically change the library reference desk’s purpose and location were everywhere.

The group who had been meeting nightly became concerned.  Where would they go?  How would they stay in touch?  What could be done to keep them together?   A group!  Let’s create a group!  This group would allow them to communicate regularly.    As places and interests continued to grow so did the group.  Gone are the days of hanging out at the reference desk with friends and colleagues but joined as one group the connections forged in those early days remains strong.

I thank Holly for the reminder that we might not be together as much as we might like but we are never alone.
