There are many locations in Second Life that cater to the love of the written word. One worth special mention is Book Island. The owner, Selina Greene, is a former publisher with nearly 15 years in the industry. The sim has been around since mid-2007 and they're currently doing some renovation that's opening up space and encouraging social activity.

Book Island has many shops devoted to various authors' work, but also boasts artists' spaces that complement the book production process.  There are two weekly live reading sessions: Mondays at 2:30pm SLT time and Thursdays at 2pm. Those will be joined by an extended open mic, after the first of the year, on Sundays. There's also a well-attended Writers' Chat Support Group (Wednesdays at 11am) that encourages the attendance of not just writers but also readers and other creative people who work with (or seek to work with) writers.

While on a stroll around the Island, I found these gems:

"In The Face", from Iota Publishing, by Lorelei Armstrong (SL: Eve Macbeth). The perfect face for murder...

"The Fox", by Arlene Radasky (SL: Imarad Breen). Ancient and modern Scotland connects in marvelous ways.

"Hindustan Contessa", by Jane Watson (SL: Arton Tripsa). Almost completely marketed in SL.

"Stress Relief", "Love and Learn", and "Promise for Now", by Diana Hunter (SL: Diana Allandale). Romance par excellence.

Jay Cox (SL: Harvey Lurra), "Memoir of A Mind Toy" and "Argonia". Sensitive sci-fi.

Autumn Constellation's reasonably priced bookcases, already stocked with books

Marney Wolfhunter of Diarts Publishing who gives live readings on the Island.

Writer's Block Cafe and special audio recording services

There were many more I could mention (a horror space, writer's resources, Notes from An Alien which was researched in SL), but I think my best advice is to make the time to visit and find your own gems. And, there's the beach, too...
