The Portal on Info Island has emerged from reorganization. The group is now titled PORTAL TO SCI FI & FANTASY.

scifi portal_001This May we resumed our discussions of novels, films, and TV series by focusing on a pioneer of science fiction – H.G. Wells. We discussed WAR OF THE WORLDS, first published in 1989 and reprinted almost 300 times in more than a dozen languages.  We compared the 1953 and 2005 film versions to the original novel.  We also mulled over the 1938 Radio Broadcast that scared the whoozis out of the Eastern USA as Orson Welles and The Mercury Theater On The Air retold the story in a convincing “you are there” format.

We have monthly Book Discussions, usually on a weekday at both 1 pm and 6:30 pm to make the discussions available to people around the world.

We hold monthly Film Discussions, sometimes on a weekday at 1 & 6:30 pm, sometimes on a Saturday at 1 pm. Occasionally we center on a TV series.

Most months we also have a Saturday event we call “Meet the Author,” where a real-life writer comes to the Portal to discuss his or her writing. How often in real life do we get the chance to question authors about their work?

Real life author Jeddin Leval came on Saturday, June 25th. He's created a build in SL which mirrors the setting of his novel—an underground city on a distant planet. We began at the Portal with a discussion, then teleported to his underground city and took a guided tour. The underground city is open for visitors after the tour and for return visits.

On the grounds and inside the Portal, there are displays related to science fiction and fantasy. Posters on the grounds include: author information, story summaries, and web links to novels, authors, films, and tv series.

Reneellene SpiritWeaver has developed a separate discussion group related to Star Trek, which meets on the second Thursday of each month. Their discussions also relate to other sci-fi series.

Our discussions are always enlightening, expanding, and fresh.  We try to have two meetings a month where we welcome ideas for events and discussions. We explore people's interests that we may not have covered yet.

We're a group that wants to know what you're interested in and we'll try to develop it at the Portal. We welcome volunteers for short-term and long-term projects.
