Global Peace, How Can It Happen? Discussion group. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Snow Scarmon

In writing the Writer’s Block 7 Days A Week article, there was one discussion group that I thought might be worth more attention.

notes_from_an_alienThursdays at 1pm SLT is Sandor Zabelin's event, "Global Peace, How Can It Happen?" Every week a group meets to discuss issues raised in Zabelin’s book Notes from An Alien.

Notes from An Alien is a novel about a distant civilization and how its self destructive actions move from greed to war to world-wide disaster and finally to enduring peace. Many years of research went into the background information for this book; and it’s a story with lessons that could help Earth in the search for Global Peace.

You don't have to read the book to join in the discussion of Global Issues and possible resolutions. For those that do wish to have the book to follow along don’t buy, Zabelin willingly gives it away to those who ask.

We all have times when we want to curl up quietly with a good book, but if you also have times when you want to talk and laugh and share, then Writer’s Block Pub is the place for you. You can find something happening at Writer’s Block Pub every day of the week. This is a list of regularly scheduled events; for the rest you have to know somebody (Book Island events and discussion group).writers_block_cafe

Sundays at 1pm SLT: Join Sandor Zabelin for our Open Mic In The Sky in the Scottish Panorama. Bring your own writings (fiction, non-fiction, poetry...) or the writings of one of your favorite authors. You can read on Voice Chat or listen to one of regulars read for you if all you want to do is listen.

Sundays at 3pm SLT is a Poetic Happy Hour with Bonchance Longfall. Come to the Writer's Block Cafe and hear Bonchance read his evocative poetry; then take part in discussions about the images and meanings :-) Often, Bonchance extends his Happy Hour a bit and that's when he invites other poets to read and receive insights from listeners

Tuesdays at 4pm SLT, Happy Hour at the Writer's Block Cafe: Hakeber Haber returns for her biweekly reading of her collection of shorts, "The Life and Times of Car Johnson", Along with free food and drinks, Car Johnson one of Hakeber's characters, will read his own stories. “Insanity never tasted so hilarious!”

Wednesdays at 11am SLT is Eppie Shoreman's ever-popular, informal and informative Writer's Chat Support Group. Readers and Artists are especially welcome! We  never know what we'll be talking about and even the seemingly random chatter is interesting.

Wednesdays: Happy Hour at 1pm SLT with Morgue McMillan. She will be reading her poetry (plus others of her works) as well as digging deep into the images and meanings of her art. This will be a new way to experience poetry--not critique or analysis, but understanding...

Thursdays at 1pm SLT is Sandor Zabelin's Event, "Global Peace, How Can It Happen?" We'll be discussing issues raised in his book, "Notes from An Alien", but you don't have to read the book to join in. They will be discussing many global issues and possible resolutions. Everyone gets a free book.

Thursdays at 4pm SLT: Another Happy Hour at the Writer's Block Cafe with Hakeber's continued reading of hilarious shorts about Car Johnson.

Fridays at 5pm SLT: Join Relish for his nano and micro fiction stories. Short but touching and often very funny. This man has certainly mastered this genre of literature.

Saturdays at 11am SLT: Eppie Shoreman returns to host Reader's Chat. You can talk about the books, short stories, or poetry you've read recently (or long ago) -- even the books you didn't like. This is a casual, welcoming group and they love to hear what YOU are, or were, reading!"

While you are there take a look around at the newly remodeled Book Island.

book_islandOpened in 2007, Book Island is one of the oldest sims on the grid dedicated to literary topics, with more than ten regular events scheduled each week as well as many special events. Stop by Pulitzer Square for information, a list of shops with TP links and information about how to join the Book Island Group.

Book Island provides a central location for the book industry in Second Life where writers, editors, agents, publishers, artists, and others can rent space to create an in-world connection with the growing community. After meeting on the Island, members of this literary community are beginning to experiment with collaboration on real world book projects. Here you can find publishers and book writers showcasing their works and of course books offered for sale in a number of formats as well as links to users to web pages. Already nearing capacity, owner Selina Greene says a number of independent publishers will soon be joining the Book Island village.

If you are an author, artist, publishing professional or just a book lover, Book Island should be high on your list of places to see.
